Not as gritty as he can get later, but on pitch like an opera star. With this show the vocals could be a little louder, but along with the quality of songs, I haven't found one that matches it. which prompted me to check the calendar of 1977. May 7th, 8th, and 9th are the crest of the Grateful Dead wave for me. Re: Who is Billy Strings and why does he keep following me? One Word: Half-Step! first set momentum certainly compromised by the incessant tuning and nailing by mickey and billy, but im so goddamn baked i could give a rats ass. I stumbled on this site a few weeks ago and relished in the music it provided me. Even if you don't dig the dead, this is a monster show. In fact, it was their very first Dead show. So, of course I check it out to see. Just like the old days. I think the best Dead show ever is everyone's first showunless that is, they are a Cornell Alum. Some of Jerry's finest, and all in the first set!!!! The Dead died when pigpen did, and was resurrected when Brent sat down at the keys. Remember, at the shows, when, no matter what the band played, it was ok. Well, this is a better show than most heads have ever seen. I myself am partial to it. I do love Cornell '77 so, but to insult the entire legacy of the band by declaring with all the other minions this "the greatest show of all time"? But where's the power during saint stephen? If this is a five, is heaven a 4.5? Just like I have since that brutally hot Harford day at the very end of July 1974. I wanted it all! I`m also a huge fan of Brent in the late 80`s. Peace. Give me a break. Yes it's overrated, only because so many consider it the best show of all time, but for Dick Latvala to have said it doesn't belong even in the top 30 of 1977, come on! The buildup in that version is TREMENDOUS. Along with 2-26-77, this recording is soooooo fine, with lots of rich, thick bass. Bobby walks up to a mike says something about "until its exactly right".. and Phil plays a loud rif the sound of chords and notes and cymbols and the crowd roars, whistles, guesses and pleads for another song. Every show has a missed lyric or someone hits a clinker. FUCK NO, i do agree that the 60's and 70's was the best for psychadelic improve 73 being my favorite year, but the dead were funky playin more of a rock sound in the 80's, i love it alot of heads do, to say they should have quit in 77 because the shows were boring and less inspired, thats a given that they wouldnt carry that energy that they had in the earlier years, i can hear as good as all u cats can though and i have plenty of 80's shows and they are not boring, its one of the sad facts of human existence, the glow always fades, nothin is as good as the first time, theres no point to view the music that way, would u view life that way? Does that make you feel better? Can't say enough about the classic. All right calling this the best show ever and not having listened to half would be a fallacy and just plane stupid. Considering the vast history of this most remarkable band, it is no wonder there is much debate over this(5-8-77)being the best dead show ever. Bobby's comments about the idiot climbing the fence and the brawling Jersey Heads after they finish the version are some of the most classic ever..The ending on this "full stop" version of Eyes from 8/6/74 is incredible. I believe this is the only time the Dead played a full stop at the end of Eyes. What a 2nd set. St. Stephen to the end alone puts this in the top 5 of 77, and then you have a pretty solid first set and perhaps the best Fire of all time. I'm pretty sure it's because the Dead sucked all the heat out of the Finger Lakes region - and put it into Barton Hall. Definitely one of the great shows, but why are there so many out there that think this one performance is so good they feel compelled to actually dub a best dead show ever? To the Keith-bashers, pls consider his Barton solo on "They Love Each Other" - wowza! It's the effin' bomb show indeed. Hells Angels rode . Thanks for not making a track change between Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain. Show. Even talked to the band. I understand Donna's not well-liked by some people, but ya gotta be fair.
