Three stars for PK. Islay malt scotch and rose water, as in a smokey, brine, iodine, perfume, incense sort of way. Pipe Tobacco. And this from a lady who smokes Balkan and English blends herself. One must either have a fried tongue or be a masochist to enjoy Pirate Kake. It is sort of goldilocks for me right out of the tin in terms of dry time. In that sense, this blend would be all-day smoke for Lataki a followers. Similar Blends: Star of the east is somewhat comparable. Interested in this product? I concur (but in a good way). This is, indeed, good tobacco. Easy smoking. First off, I love latakia-from blends with just a hint to full blown blends like this wonderful smoke from C&D. Even the smaller pieces have a remarkable cohesive quality and are really unnecessarily difficult to get prepped. Has a pleasant, lingering after taste and strong room note. Mix in a little cavendish burley, add a touch of the Turk,and press this in a 70,000 ton vise and you have PIRATE KAKE! I had ordered the Virginia sampler about 3 years ago, and did like the Pirate cake best so ordered an 8 oz. The components come together quite nicely and gives a nice load of nicotine in this offering from C&D. Its like a quadruple IPA, and probably should be served with one - the combination of nasty wet brush fire and Lemon Pledge could strip the tastebuds down to oblivion, at which point Pirate Kake would taste good. Like most lat-bombs the nicotine isn't noticeable at all, but the flavor is huge. GArrr!! Ive tried a lot of english blends that said they had a lot of latakia or said they have full strength smoke, like Samuel Gawiths Commonwealth Mixture. I take back ever wanting it as a broken flake, I love the ritual of breaking chunks off the black bricks and rubbing them out individually. Pirate Kake is Latakia. If it were consistent from top to bottom this would be a five-star rating and my number one smoke. Other than many expect, Latakia is a very low in nicotine and tongue friendly tobacco which is very strong in taste, though. A friend sent me a large sample of Pirate Kake a few months ago. Very few relights, and is just heavenly. I still rate it at three stars, and worth your consideration if you're into heavy English blends. Final thoughts: if you get bored with all the medium strength english blends, and want something a little stronger tasting then pick some of this up and throw it in your rotation for the nights when you feel you just need something extra. I don't think I will be buying another tin, but it was a good experience. The lat is very forward and pronounced in this. This is one of the strongest Latakia blends I have ever smoked. It does have a slight spiciness to it, but it's missing the punchiness of Ten Russians, the depth of Bill Baileys Balkan, and the spicy sweet subtleties of Plum Pudding. :). The best way to describe the taste is by saying that if someone stuffed a salty piece of old leather in a pipe and set fire to it, you'd be smoking something akin to Pirate Kake. Easy to break off and prepare in your pipe. Also, or you use your bare hands to crumble it or a knife. This will really mess-up your hands when you break it up so I just did it once and keep it in a mason jar. Let them try Kake and they'll abandon blends they thought were pinnacle. Burns well and leaves a soft, fine ash. The burley is noticeable not so much for the taste but more so the nicotine hit that it helps provide. I enjoyed it because of that. I love lats but to be honest they mostly taste the same to me (mostly but there are plenty of exceptions) and judging by the aroma I figured thatd be The case. When rotated with other blends (I smoked Virginias around this) it was really good, but trying to go bowl after bowl until the tin was empty was just too much for me. Highly recommended if you like coffee with your pipes. This is probably the best or 2nd best I've had. Very smokey and rich, but smooooth. Apparently, it's recommended to try mixing this with some Haunted Bookshop, however I have not tried that yet. i have found this one to be better if smoked only from time to time, and not as a good daily smoke, as more than one bowl in a day leaves the mouth unable to taste anything else for several hours. This is my favorite Lat-bomb of all time, having tried many that get harsh or bitter. Since I've bought it, it did mellow out a little and is now quite a pleasant smoke, but I feel there are a lot of better thought out english/balkan blends to spend my time with. One of my favorite after-dinner, sitting on the porch, watching-the-glaciers-move pipes is a "latakia parfait", constructed thusly: In a tallish bowl combine first Old Ironsides as broken flakes (bottom third), next crumbled Pirate Kake (middle third), and finally Commonwealth Mixture (top third of bowl). Its like setting a pine forest on fire inside your mouth. I have just finished my first tin of Pirate Kake, and feel like I'm in love! There is also some sweetness to the blend, but the factor that I can't quite describe is almost a menthol sensation. Some would say the latakia is over dominant so much that you can not taste the other tobaccos in this blend. Got a bit cellered right now to see how it turns out month by month. A few lights required to get it going. After just shy of 4 years in the cellar the blend becomes very sweet, round, and displays a number of notes not originally apparent. One of my favorites. Oh and it happens to just be the perfect pairing with a dark cup of muddy coffee. It lends itself well to smoking out of a cob, in my experience. This stuff produces huge, thick clouds of smoke which never dissipate. It is a spicy, full-flavour Latakia mixture accompanied by Turkish to add a significant Oriental twist. I taste at least three different alternate flavor notes as different sized chunks of tobacco burn.
